Rosie Reviews: SugarBaby Skincare.

Rosie Leishman has reviewed the skincare range from SugarBaby for New Zealand online magazine for Gen Z girls, Billie New Zealand.

As a second year uni student and first time flatter, I am facing the harsh reality of those chilly winter months in our hectic house of eight. I have fallen short at putting effort into my skin as it hasn’t been a priority. My skincare routine is often sacrificed for my attempts to stay warm and just get into bed!

So, when I got this opportunity from SugarBaby to trial their newest skincare range, I was thrilled to try some new, quality products, have a routine set out and make the daily commitment to take the time to look after my skin.

With their mantra ‘Look Good + Feel Good + Do Good’, SugarBaby is an Australian tanning and skin care brand, committed to remaining at the forefront of environmentally friendly, cruelty-free beauty products. SugarBaby devotes itself to delivering effective, crafted and grounded beauty solutions for your skin and the planet.  All products are PETA Certified and 100% vegan, with no toxic-to-the-skin ingredients like parabens and formaldehydes. Instead, SugarBaby is supercharged with boosting active ingredients to nourish and hydrate for happy and healthy skin. All bundled beautifully into their signature bright baby pink eco-friendly and recyclable packaging.

I have a fairly normal skin type and am lucky enough to have never dealt with serious acne. But, over the last year, I have been prone to hormonal breakouts and when I began trialing the products in mid May my skin wasn’t very happy with me. It was sore and red and in need of some support.

So, being sent these beautiful bright, rosie pink products made my week and my flatmates and I excitedly unboxed SugarBaby’s collection:

  • Wash & Glow Skin Replenishing Daily Facial Cleanser

  • SOS Super Serum Glow Boosting Facial Serum

  • Good Hydrations Hydrating Facial Serum

  • Eye Wonder Brightening Eye Cream

  • Dream Cream Skin Loving Daily Facial Cream

  • Say Hello to Glow Detoxifying Pink Desert-Clay Mask

  • Sc-Rub Glow Cell Renewal Exfoliating Facial Scrub

I don’t know a lot about ‘skin science’ as such, but do know that Niacinamide, Hydrochloric acid and Vitamin C are key ingredients. So, it's comforting to know that with SugarBaby they aim to make it simple for users to get everything they need without creating too much confusion.

All of SugarBaby’s instructions are super easy to understand and don't intimidate users who may be daunted by the overwhelming nature of skincare products. I followed the general routine of cleansing and moisturizing day and night and alternating between the serums. I used the eye cream every evening, scrub twice a week and mask once a week.

I first tried the ‘Good Hydrations Hydrating Facial Serum’. And my notes at the time literally read, “My goodness! The serum smells and feels amazing!”. Branded to ‘hydrate + renew’, the serum feels like a refreshing glass of water. Coconut smelling and cooling, this hyaluronic acid gel absorbs nicely and feels especially good in the morning as a way to wake yourself up.

I have been using the cleanser every night and it is definitely a good staple. Gel like at first, it foams beautifully and is super gentle and soft and you’re left replenished and feeling squeaky clean. It is also a perfect medium size for travel and one pump goes a long way!

The ‘Dream Cream Skin Loving Daily Facial Cream’ has been my most consistent product morning and night. Less fragrant than the other products, it has a slightly acidic smell on your skin. The texture is weightless and light and a little goes a long way, which I think is great as a morning and evening routine staple to cater to all skin types. The cream layers on nicely and is especially good before makeup as a primer option. Even my 19 year old guy flatmate who has never used skincare before loved it! Overall, the cream is a nice combo of hydrating and soothing and leaves your skin soft, but I don’t think it’s necessarily  a standout compared to SugarBaby’s other products.

You know what was a standout? The eye cream! I haven’t ever really considered eye products as a necessary part of a routine, but this one is pretty persuasive! Made with marine bioactives, Vitamin C and antioxidant-rich plant extracts, my favorite part of Sugarbaby’s ‘Eye Wonder Brightening Eye Cream’ is the product design. Shaped like a lip balm, it fits perfectly under the eye and feels like a cooling roller to depuff and target dark circle areas. It is lightweight and soothing and my eyes always feel nice and dewy the next morning.

It took me a while to trial the ‘Sc-Rub & Glow Cell Renewal Exfoliating Facial Scrub’ as I feel nervous about how aggravating and stripping exfoliants can be. But I was pleasantly surprised by SugarBaby’s scrub. The complete opposite of rough, the product was oil based with only a slight grit of the ground olive seeds balanced out in a light whip, almost ‘nut-butter’ texture. Once washed off the skin feels extra soft and smells DELISH.

The ‘Glow Detoxifying Pink Desert-Clay Mask’ is a really buttery, light and coconut cream consistency that applies nicely to the skin. It is a type of face mask that you put on and forget it was even there as it isn’t too thick or pasty like some clay masks, and doesn’t harden intensely. It feels like an extra thick layer of moisturizer. Containing mineral-rich Australian pink desert clay, shiitake mushroom, witch hazel, shea butter, red algae and organic coconut water, it conditions and purifies the skin. I love the sound of those ingredients and would be keen to keep consistently incorporating the mask as a part of my daily routine!

Last, but not least, my favourite product might have to be the ‘SOS Super Serum Glow Boosting Facial Serum’. I am a sucker for serums as I love how they feel like a nourishing, healthy meal for your face. Containing niacinamide and lots of vitamins this serum feels like an extra boosting barrier. Compared to the hydrating serum, the SOS was extra dewy and brightening. It is creamier, smells delicious and leaves the skin so smooth. I would definitely get this product again to continue to support my skin's immunity.

The strong coconut smell of all of SugarBaby’s line is yummy, but quite intense when using all the products at once. Reminiscent of fake tan, the ‘beachy’ scent sends you straight back to summer and the smell sticks on your skin throughout the day. I personally like this but some users might find it a bit much. Not only is the scent long lasting, but also the “feel” of the products on your skin. I’ve found that I use a lot less make up throughout the day as that glow from SugarBaby’s range feels enough.

Overall, trialing SugarBaby has felt like an act of self-love. As I started my mornings properly and ended the day by treating myself to applying good quality products and putting effort into my skin. The products are pretty affordable, easy to use and you come away more radiant and refreshed. My skin has broken out way less and I’ve noticed a real difference in the tone and softness of my skin. Plus, the products make me feel like I'm on an Australian beach tanning in the sunshine instead of layering up in my cold student flat, which is always an added bonus! Finally, the fact SugarBaby prides itself on being plant-based and ethically and environmentally kind is reassuring, as I know I'm not hurting our planet at the cost of looking after my skin and feeling good!

Thank you so much SugarBaby! Love your work! Xxx
