That’s a (Spotify) wrap on 2023.

If you’re anything like us at Billie, you’re a sucker for a good yearly wrap-up. Spotify Wrapped has been released for 2023 and the fascination is real. Even if we should already know who and what we listen to, each time December rolls around we are champing at the bit to over analyse our prettily-packaged listening habits. After poring over our own favourite artists and tunes, we can all admit to turning to Instagram to snoop at the results of friends and family.

To keep us nosy parkers satisfied, Spotify has released the streaming stats for New Zealand as a whole. So if you were wondering what sweet melodies were flowing through Kiwis ears this year, then wonder no more - from our fave global hits to our best-loved local beats, Spotify knows it all!

Our overall preferences:

When it comes to our favourite artist, it turns out we’re a bunch of Swifties - no surprises there! With Taylor’s versions for Speak Now and 1989 being released this year, we were clearly making up for lost time and doing our bit in helping her take ownership over her records (at least we can justify it that way hehe). Will this stat help in our campaign for Taylor to bring a show to Aotearoa? We sure hope so!

New Zealand’s Most-Streamed Artists

  1. Taylor Swift

  2. Drake

  3. The Weeknd

  4. Ed Sheeran

  5. SZA

Taylor was knocked down a place when it came to our favourite albums, but only so queen SZA could rise! SZA really rose to the fame she deserves this year and us Kiwis weren’t lagging behind the rest of the world in soaking up the smooth vocals on her second album SOS. Also, a special shoutout to local lads SIX60 - it’s great to see their self-titled album full of certified summer bangers was well-supported in the homeland.

New Zealand Most-Streamed Albums

  1. SOS by SZA

  2. Midnights by Taylor Swift

  3. SIX60 by SIX60

  4. One Thing At A Time by Morgan Wallen

  5. Starboy by The Weeknd

We soaked up Miley’s self-esteem this year with Flowers reigning supreme on our top songs list. While our Top 5 also consists of TikTok tunes both old and new and a not-so-guilty pleasure country melody, it was Miley’s candid confidence that won us over.

New Zealand Most-Streamed Songs

  1. Flowers” by Miley Cyrus

  2. Kill Bill” by SZA

  3. Boy's a liar Pt. 2” by PinkPantheress, Ice Spice

  4. Last Night” by Morgan Wallen

  5. Sure Thing” by Miguel

Local lowdown:

Our homegrown heroes of 2023 come with no surprises. A common theme of chilled out, easygoing artists dominated our picks for the year, proving that we are truly a laidback bunch.

Lorde’s return to home soil for her tour at the beginning of the year was also celebrated accordingly as she secured a spot at number 5.

New Zealand Most-Streamed Local Artists

  1. SIX60

  2. L.A.B.

  3. Sons Of Zion

  4. Katchafire

  5. Lorde

One could put it lightly to say we were consistent when it came to our top songs. We were clearly getting our groove on with four L.A.B tunes on constant rotation. We’d love to know if this was skewed towards the summer months or if we craved L.A.B soulful notes during the darker winter months too. Also, we’re clearly suckers for nostalgia with SIX60’s 2011 hit still blessing our playlists on a more than regular basis.

New Zealand Most-Streamed Local Songs

  1. In the Air by L.A.B.

  2. Take It Away by L.A.B.

  3. Mr Reggae by L.A.B.

  4. Controller by L.A.B.

  5. Don’t Forget Your Roots by SIX60

Billie’s faves:

Here at Billie, we spend most of the day with Spotify on in the background. We love music and it’s safe to say the minutes spent listening to GUTS and TV is high…
