Billie reviews: ghd Duet Style.

As a repeat offender of simply brushing my hair and boosting out the door, I usually don’t have the patience or care for styling tools. My thick lion’s mane is tricky to tame, so I’ve always assumed styling would be more effort than it was worth. That was until I gave the new ghd Duet Style a whirl. It’s the newest hair styling tool in town, and it’s here to bless low-maintenance ladies like me.

What is the Duet Style?

As hinted at in its name, the ghd Duet Style is a 2-in-1 hot air styler - or in simple terms the marriage of a hair dryer and straightener. With this practical pairing, the tool is claimed to transform your hair from wet to styled. The method to this mad cool tool, is ghd’s new AIRFUSION™️ technology which combines the power of internal air flow with the performance of four low-temperature straightening plates. Using the tool is as easy as grabbing a portion of hair, as you would when using a straightener, and ironing it for four to five strokes. Hot air in the centre of the Duet Style removes dampness while the four plates on each side straighten and smooth.

Experience and effectiveness.

With a desire to have the simplest of morning routines, and a reputation as the fastest to get ready in my friend group, I usually steer clear of styling tools. This had me super intrigued to see whether this hybrid 2-in-1 option could sway me.

After using the tool a few times now, for office-primed hairdos and to tidy my locks for last-minute outings, I can confidently say this will be a staple in my poor excuse for an at-home salon. If you’ve used a straightener before, the ghd Duet Style is handled just the same. To achieve a styled look, I simply glided the tool over portions of my hair - no instructions or YouTube tutorials required.

A huge positive is the Duet Style’s time-saving tech. When on the off-chance I can be bothered straightening my hair, I have to first use the hair dryer, and then labour away with the straightener. By the time I get to straightening, I am usually a hot, sweaty mess. With the dual action of the Duet Style, hot air is kept away from your face, and the number of tools required is halved. It allowed me to maintain a low-maintenance routine while scoring sleek, tidy hair - sounds like a win-win. Much to the delight of my flatmates - who love to complain about the noise of my cheap hair dryer - the Duet Style is also on the quieter side, meaning for a more peaceful style experience.

In terms of visual results, this tool has definitely been designed to give you a long-lasting look. I noticed that my naturally wavy hair, which normally loves to rebel soon after straightening, did behave better with the Duet Style. Straight locks, with less flyaways and frizz, were achieved after four to five strokes over each portion of hair. This is likely due to ghd designing the tool in a way that helps retain your hair’s natural moisture level, thanks to low-temperatures and angled root-drying vents.

In addition, second-day hair can easily be zhuzhed up with the handy Shine Shot feature. At the tap of a button, the tool became a straightener (with airflow stopped) and quickly refreshed and smoothed my locks. This added bonus definitely helps outweigh the one negative of this product - the price. RRP NZD $645 is a big investment for a styling tool, however you are essentially purchasing two tools for the price of one. The age-old saying ‘time is money’ also helps me reason with the price tag of the Duet Style. With simultaneous drying and styling, you can shorten the time spent in the bathroom before work, and give yourself more time to socialise on nights out.

Practicality.

When weighing up whether to save your pennies for a big purchase, it is important to look at the practicality of the item. Again the 2-in-1 functionality of ghd’s Duet Style earns itself several practicality points. As a hair dryer and styler in one, it saves room in your bag when travelling and doesn’t take up nearly as much bathroom storage space. Whilst the tool is a little larger than the usual ghd straighteners, it remains lightweight and doesn’t give your arms too much of a workout.

Overall, I would highly recommend the ghd Duet Style to anyone looking for a convenient yet effective way to have a good hair day every day. You may need to put away a few dollars before being able to make the purchase, but the investment is worth it for those looking to save time, hassle, and stress when styling their hair.
